Allegiance STEAM Academy Thrive

Expanding School Choice and Unleashing Student Potential

November Focus: Growth Mindset Conversations

How do our conversations shape how children think about learning, challenges, and success?

The questions we ask influence how children think about themselves as learners.

Welcome to November’s Thrive at Home campaign! At Allegiance STEAM Academy, our students engage daily in the Engineering Design Process, where mistakes are celebrated not as failures, but as essential opportunities for learning and improvement.

The way we talk with our children at home about their schoolwork, struggles, and successes directly shapes their confidence, academic resilience, and willingness to tackle new challenges.

When we replace performance-focused evaluations with process-oriented dialogue, children learn that intelligence and ability are not fixed traits, but muscles that expand through effort, strategy, and perseverance. Success is not determined by what students know today, but by their willingness to learn, grow, persevere, and keep trying tomorrow.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is progress. Children develop confidence when they learn that challenges help them grow.

Three "Thrive Hacks" for Growth Mindset Conversations

Focus on Effort & Strategy:

Swap fixed praise like "You are so smart" with process-focused feedback like "I noticed how hard you worked on that complex problem" or "You tried several strategies until you found one that worked"

Ask Reflective Questions:

Trade monosyllabic after-school questions like "How was school?" or "Did you get it right?" for metacognitive prompts such as "What challenged your thinking today?" or "What strategy helped you solve that problem?"

Normalize and Celebrate Mistakes:

Frame mistakes as necessary, valuable information for growth. When your child hits a wall, ask: "What did this mistake teach you?" or "What can we try differently next time?"
